A large town in South Yorkshire Rotherham is a town that straddles the River Don - it has been a market town for over 800 years. The town's settlement can be traced back to the Iron Age and Roman times. Although the area had been mainly known for its iron, it was coal that brought the Industrial Revolution to Rotherham.
