Top tips for car selling preparation

Cleaning

First and foremost, your car should be clean. This seems an obvious one, but you would be amazed how often people try to sell a dirty or messy car and then struggle to sell it, particularly when selling privately. Give your car a thorough clean inside and out, or if you're willing to spend a little money why not make a booking with a professional valet service.

It's also a good idea to remove any personal belongings from the car. This makes the car look newer and well kept to any potential buyer. It also reduces the risk of you selling the car and losing any items still left inside.

Maintenance

You can command a higher sale price the longer the length of MOT on the vehicle. If your MOT is due to expire within the next 3 months, it is certainly worth considering putting the vehicle through a test to ensure you can sell for the best possible price. If the MOT finds any mechanical faults with the car, these should be repaired before selling.

Inspection

Before selling, it is a good idea to carry out your own inspection on your vehicle, just as you would if you were viewing it as a potential buyer. This allows you to spot any damage or faults which should be clearly and honestly described in your sales advertisement if you are selling privately. Alternatively, if you decide to sell through Money4YourMotors, carrying out your own inspection prepares you for when our vehicle purchaser carries out an extensive inspection of their own, as you will already be aware of any damage or faults.

Private plates

If you would like to keep your private plate you will need to contact the DVLA and ask them to transfer your car back to its original number plate. Be aware that the DVLA will need your V5C and the process can take several weeks, so it's a good idea to be organised and sort this out before you begin the sales process either privately or through Money4YourMotors. Alternatively, we are happy to purchase your vehicle with your private plate if you aren't bothered about retaining it.

Documents

Our vehicle purchaser will need to see three forms of ID from you during your appointment. At least one form of identification should be a photo and one must be proof of address. Unfortunately, if you are unable to present the correct ID we cannot proceed with the appointment as we must be able to prove that you are the registered owner of the car.

Our vehicle purchaser will also need to see the V5C document for the vehicle, as well as any documents relating to service history and MOT certificates.
